When and how it began

The Northern Baptist Convention was organized in Washington, D.C., in 1907 to coordinate existing Baptist societies. Subsequent organizational changes led to the name American Baptist Churches USA in 1972. Its congregations have roots older than those national dates.

Beliefs and practices

Believer’s baptism, congregational freedom, mission, and religious liberty are central Baptist commitments. American Baptist congregations include varied cultural backgrounds and theological emphases.

A typical worship service

Expect singing, prayer, Bible readings, and preaching. Some services include invitations to respond publicly. Communion frequency and admission policies differ.

What the worship space looks like

A pulpit or stage and an immersion baptistry are common, though not universal.

Branches and differences

Local churches cooperate through regional and national ministries. This body is distinct from the Southern Baptist Convention and from the several National Baptist conventions.
