A historical and descriptive introduction. Local practice varies; the examples below are not a judgment of a community’s faithfulness.

When and how it began

The Unity of Brethren was organized in Bohemia in 1457 amid the legacy of Jan Hus. Refugees established Herrnhut in 1722; renewal there shaped the later worldwide Moravian movement.

Beliefs and practices

Christ-centered faith, shared Christian life, mission, music, and prayer are characteristic. Baptism and Communion are practiced.

A typical worship service

Liturgy, hymns, Scripture, and preaching are common. A lovefeast shares simple food and drink in fellowship; it is distinct from Holy Communion.

What the worship space looks like

Worship spaces often favor a clear, relatively simple arrangement with strong provision for congregational music.

Branches and differences

Moravian provinces exist across several continents and differ in language and local customs. The Moravian Unity of Brethren should not be confused with every church carrying “Brethren” in its name.
