A historical and descriptive introduction. Local practice varies; the examples below are not a judgment of a community’s faithfulness.
When and how it began
The Schwarzenau Brethren began with baptisms in 1708, drawing on Pietist and Anabaptist influences. Migration and later divisions produced several related bodies.
Beliefs and practices
Believer’s baptism, peacemaking, simple living, and practical service are important. The love feast combines footwashing, a meal, and Communion.
A typical worship service
Typical services include singing, Scripture, preaching, and prayer. Love feasts occur as special observances rather than necessarily every Sunday.
What the worship space looks like
Meetinghouses and modern sanctuaries are both used; simplicity has been an influential ideal.
Branches and differences
The Church of the Brethren and related German Baptist Brethren bodies differ. Plymouth Brethren, emerging in the 19th century, are a separate movement despite the shared word “Brethren.”
