When and how it began
Aimee Semple McPherson’s ministry and the opening of Angelus Temple in Los Angeles in 1923 launched the Foursquare movement. Evangelism, missionary training, and expanding congregational networks were important to its development.
Beliefs and practices
The fourfold emphasis presents Jesus as Savior, Baptizer with the Holy Spirit, Healer, and Coming King. The church is Trinitarian and practices water baptism and Communion.
A typical worship service
Extended singing, expressive prayer, preaching, testimony, and prayer ministry are common. The degree of spontaneity differs.
What the worship space looks like
Gatherings may use simple halls, traditional sanctuaries, or large auditoriums with a music platform.
Branches and differences
Foursquare churches belong to a wider international movement with national structures. The name describes its fourfold message, not the shape or architecture of a church building.
