When and how it began
The Mar Thoma Church developed through reform within Kerala’s Saint Thomas Christian community, notably from 1836. Its first-century association with Thomas is a received foundation tradition; the documented reform movement is a separate historical matter.
Beliefs and practices
It joins an Eastern liturgical inheritance and episcopal leadership with Reformation emphases on Scripture and preaching.
A typical worship service
Holy Qurbana, readings, prayers, singing, and a sermon structure worship. Malayalam and other local languages are used according to the congregation.
What the worship space looks like
A defined sanctuary, altar, cross, and clergy vestments express its Syriac liturgical heritage.
Branches and differences
This is a distinct church, not another name for every Saint Thomas Christian. Syro-Malabar Catholic, Syro-Malankara Catholic, Orthodox, and other Kerala communities have related but different histories.
