A historical and descriptive introduction. Local practice varies; the examples below are not a judgment of a community’s faithfulness.

When and how it began

The SBC formed in 1845 amid a dispute over appointing slaveholders as missionaries. Slavery was a central cause of the separation. In 1995 the convention formally acknowledged and repudiated its historical role in defending slavery and racism.

Beliefs and practices

Churches emphasize conversion, biblical authority, believer’s baptism by immersion, and evangelism. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are understood as ordinances. Local congregations govern themselves.

A typical worship service

Expect singing, prayer, Bible readings, and preaching. Some services include invitations to respond publicly. Communion frequency and admission policies differ.

What the worship space looks like

A pulpit or stage and an immersion baptistry are common, though not universal.

Branches and differences

The convention supports cooperative missions and ministries; it is not a bishop-led hierarchy controlling every congregation. Associations and state conventions are related forms of cooperation. Local service styles differ.
