A historical and descriptive introduction. Local practice varies; the examples below are not a judgment of a community’s faithfulness.

When and how it began

Pastors organized the Wisconsin Synod in 1850. Its subsequent development involved immigrant congregations, theological education, and relationships with other confessional Lutheran bodies. Its constitution was adopted on May 26, 1850.

Beliefs and practices

WELS emphasizes biblical authority, the Lutheran confessions, grace through Christ, baptism, and Communion. Agreement in doctrine is central to its understanding of shared church fellowship.

A typical worship service

Many services follow a liturgy with confession, readings, hymns, sermon, and Communion. Others use contemporary music and less formal orders.

What the worship space looks like

Crosses or crucifixes, a font, pulpit, and altar or Communion table are common.

Branches and differences

WELS is separate from both the LCMS and ELCA. Districts connect local congregations; practices of Communion and joint worship should be discussed with a local pastor.
